Summer or not, the evenings tended to drop a fair amount, leaving the world grasped in a chill that wasn't present during the blistering hours of the day. A single shape traversed the lands at such an early hour - or at least, currently the only one - her sleek body moving with ease grace, her treading so light, it was as if she glided. A ghost, a mysterious woman swathed in faded tawny tones, a sense of pride seeming to glow from within her body. Her shoulders were squared evenly, long, thick tail swaying out behind her, as hips swayed to the rhythm of their own drum. Her thick set of golden eyes flickered, catching ever nudge of movement or every twitch in her surroundings. She was alert, but not afraid - careful, but not cautious.
Vitani approached the mirror-lined chamber as her place slowed, eyes seething inside the twisted maze to already catch glimpses of her own reflection. For some reason, she found herself venture to this place of mornings such as this, enjoying the strange and cruel ways in which this location played with her ears. Once inside, every glance would catch a reflection of yourself. Every direction would show your face. It was both chilling and mesmerizing, and the Queen adored it. Some might find such a confession odd, but everyone had their quirks, even Vitani, who would probably not admit it, but they remained nonetheless.
Her body coiled, limbs stretching forward to carry to regal woman inside the chamber's depths, countless images of herself splattering the glistening mirrors. She felt her heart thrum gently in her chest, and though she only lingered a few feet within the passageway, it was enough to confuse her. The sense of not knowing was something she had grown unfamiliar with, living the glamorous and priceless life of royalty, and she always knew what was to come and what was to be done. She and Fenris made the decisions, leaving little room for surprise. Here, however, was a complete mystery; one she had not yet been able to completely decode. | [atrb=width,100] words ,

Some would consider the hall of mirrors a rather pointless place, and only those with overwhelming vanity could truly appreciate it, as they would be surrounded by their own reflection, and they could wallow in egotistical bliss.
However, Grace was far from vain, yet she still enjoyed paying a visit to the rather odd structure every so often. It was easier to find peace here than the gardens, the palace, the bazaar - to try and find a moment of quiet and solitude in the central bazaar would just be foolish, as it was probably the most packed area in the royale circle - or the temple. Personally, the Princess wasn't very religious, not to the extent where she would pay homage to Ano and Anrithka on a daily basis, so to find her in the temple would be a rare thing. And she didn't fancy getting gawped at by merchants and entertainers, for the lower classes often reacted that way when in the presence of royalty. It was to be expected, really. She assumed that there would be nobody else in the hall of mirrors until the scent of somebody awfully familiar wafted towards her as she stood at the entrance, peering in.
Queen Vitani, or as Grace affectionately knew her, Mother.
The young snow leopard felt a small smile tug at her lips as she padded forward, blue gaze shifting from left to right, every so often catching a glimpse of her reflection out of the corner of her eye. It had been a while since she had spoken with her mother, and the princess fancied that she had always been much closer to her dam than she had her sire. The King was a rather callous brute, and although Grace loved her father dearly, he had been rather distant with her, ever since she had been old enough to understand the task that she would be given once she reached the age to take the throne. Quite honestly, the girl supposed that Fenris would get even colder with her in the future, right up until her coronation - well, it was a joint coronation, as Zerissen would get crowned King alongside her - and maybe even afterwards. It was a shame, but she supposed that she would live with it, because she knew deep down that her father loved her.
It was a rather confusing task, navigating her way through the maze of mirrors, but when the scent of her mother got stronger, she knew that the older female was up ahead. And after what seemed to be several tedious minutes of following the trail, she saw her mother standing in front of her, looking rather puzzled. "Mother, what a pleasant surprise. I didn't know you would be awake this early." The princes cooed happily, a smile on her face at the sight of the woman, approaching and brushing her cheek against the older female's chin affectionately.

Maneuvering through this chamber's halls was difficult, and though it was quickly becoming aggravating, she found herself confused and unsure in the direction in which she was. Her eyes snapped around, her mirrored reflections flashing themselves like ghastly mimics, moving in sync and copying every slight twitch she made. Muscles rippled beneath her pelt as she coiled, the maze of mirrors quickly snuffling the desire to rid herself from the palace walls and venture somewhere else. Vitani needed her moments of solitude, and this was often the place to do it.
She turned back, starting to make her way back where she had came, before a voice cooed toward her, sinking into her skin with blissful familiarity. Gaze set upon her eldest daughter, the heiress to the throne, and a tender smile tilted itself across the Queen's beautiful muzzle. Tongue grazed out from between her lips to gently swath itself across the princess' forehead, Grace's scent slipping through her nose with a calming effect. ''Daughter ~'' She purred softly, eyes running over her daughter with an appreciated tint. It was odd to think that this leopardess would one day take Vitani's place as Queen, and rule alongside her mate. It frightened the woman to some extent, but she knew that she could teach Grace all there was to know, so she could be prepared. ''I could say the same for you, sweetheart; I guess I just needed a moment to myself.'' She mused, offering a wink to her eldest child.
Her lips pursed together, tail flickering out behind her as a semi-bitter smile replaced the joyous look that had previously lingered there. Reminiscing in the thoughts of before, the Queen's voice lingered out again, slipping easily through the passageway toward her company. ''Oh Grace, it's so hard to think you and Zerissan will take the throne soon; time will go by so fast.'' She sighed, shaking her head and leaning forward to brush cheeks with the younger feline, keeping them like that for a moment. Her voice was filled with soft emotion, seeping through in a noticeable fashion. She often wondered what the heiress thought of it herself, and if it was the life she sought to pursue. Vitani had noted the behavior in her son, Damask, but surely it wasn't the same for her firstborn, right? It was such a shame, for the woman only wanted her children to be happy, no matter what it took.

The slender young slip of a female let a small smile grace her lips as her thoughts lingered on her mate. She held him in high regard, especially for a male she'd only known for a few months. With him by her side, she knew that the Kingdom would be safe, as although he was rather aloof and stoic, he was intelligent, and in her opinion rather approachable. Not that she wasn't, of course, or so she liked to think.
As her gaze fell on her mother, she couldn't quite imagine how the older woman must feel about all this. She had been a monarch for a long while, and to know that soon she would give up everything to her... well, it must be daunting. Grace had an inkling that her father wasn't too pleased to pass his rank to someone else, and the fact that this someone else wasn't even blood related probably made it worse. But the King would just have to adapt, wouldn't he? Law stated - and it had been so for generations - that the reigning King and Queen had to pass down their title to their eldest child and their mate when said prince or princess reached the age of six. Fenris had known - as had Vitani - that this day would come, but Grace was glad that her mother at least seemed to be taking it relatively well.
She smiled as the Queen turned and approached her, a brilliant smile on her muzzle, and the princess sighed with contentment as her mother's tongue ran over her forehead, soothing the female. ''Daughter ~'' The older woman seemed to be pleased by her eldest's presence, which in turn pleased the girl. ''I could say the same for you, sweetheart; I guess I just needed a moment to myself.'' At that moment, the younger female looked rather sheepish. The heiress had no idea that she'd intruded on her mother's peace. "Oh, I'm sorry Mother. I didn't know that I was intruding. I can leave if you wish...?" After a moment of studying the older female's facade, Grace realized that the content smile on her mother's face had suddenly altered to a rather bittersweet expression.
How curious.
Grace tilted her head to one side, quirking a brow as she waited to see if her mother would voice her thoughts, and after a moment, she did. ''Oh Grace, it's so hard to think you and Zerissan will take the throne soon; time will go by so fast.'' Oh. So that was what was on her mind. The princess sighed and looked down at her paws for a minute, before peering back up at her mother, looking rather... vulnerable in that moment. "Father isn't taking it very well, you know." Of course she knew that. Vitani was the mate of the King, and his one and only love, therefore she knew everything going on inside Fenris's head. Right? "And I know... it's rather daunting, really. How will I live up to you, Mother? The public love their current leaders, and I can't blame them. You're the perfect host, the perfect matriarch.... the perfect Queen." Looking rather disheartened, and feeling rather ashamed for showing such doubts in front of the fellow royal - although really, if she couldn't talk to her own mother, who else could she talk to - she sat down and lent against the mirror behind her, her bright blue gaze searching her mother's face as she anxiously waited for some kind of response.

Looking at Grace reminded Vitani of herself; she was beautiful girl, but not only on the outside. She had a good heart, and had been brought up to respect good morals and behave with the right attitude. Though each child of the Queen's was different, she adored them all for their quirks and individuality. Over the years, the leopardess would hate to admit to smothering Grace in more attention, but it was slightly true, but only due to the fact that she was the princess, and needed more teaching and guidance then the rest. She felt guilty for such a confession, but she loved each child, and made sure they knew it.
Vitani's gaze stayed rested on her daughter, a tender smile stretched calmly up against her muzzle. She listened to her gentle voice, a low chuckle rumbling from the Queen's chest at her child's apology. She stepped closer, the mirrored versions of herself mimicking the woman in the change of position, long tail flickering as she then took a seat. Her legs folded, bringing the leopard to a appropriate seating position, where she could converse with Grace in a more relaxed manner. ''My dear, don't apologize; I had my moment, and spending time with family is always preferred.'' Vitani cooed, ears flickering lightly over her head, the rumbling of her chest slowly down to a nonexistent state.
However, at her daughter's next words, her heart fell slightly. Grace would be queen - she and Zerissen would rule the kingdom, strong and unstoppable. They would make the decisions, and decide the fate of their people. ''I know, Grace.'' She sighed softly, thinking of her mate. Fenris was a remarkable ruler, and had grown used to his place in power. Vitani too, would find it difficult to step down, but she was more willing then her husband was. Either way, however, they would deal with it together, and Vitani would do her best to coax Fenris from this throne for their daughter to rule. ''Please don't worry though, sweetheart; you are a remarkable young lady, and in two short years you will be a fantastic Queen.'' She spoke tenderly, and reached out with her muzzle to gently rub her nose against Grace's skin as she leaned against the mirror. ''It'll be tough at first, but me and your Father will always be here to help. You are being raised to take our place, and I know you will prove all your doubts wrong.'' Vitani pulled back, letting her shoulders square after the reassuring words were spoken.
Grace didn't realize all of her potential, and it was such a shame.

They say that if you wanted to know what a girl would look like when she was older, just look at her mother.
And looking at Vitani now, who didn't look a day older than five in her daughter's opinion, the epitome of beauty - although, even though it was the truth, she would have said it regardless of what her mother looked like, because the woman had been her role model for as long as Grace could remember - and someone that the princess generally wanted to become. ''My dear, don't apologize; I had my moment, and spending time with family is always preferred.'' That response didn't surprise the girl one bit. Vitani had always had time for her family, ever since the princess could remember. She could have always gone to her mother - no matter what time of day - and the Queen would have dropped everything for her. It made her feel special, but who wouldn't feel special? "As long as you're sure. I know quiet time is hard to come by around here, things are... hectic at the moment. But when isn't it?"
The older snow leopard then seemed to consider what Grace had said before, about Fenris, and her face fell slightly. The princess sighed, knowing that it was a difficult topic, and one that she didn't know whether to breach or not. But it had been said now, it was out in the open. She knew that her mother was a clever and reasonable woman, and she always seemed to have an answer to everything, and even in the trickiest and most fragile of situations, she didn't disappoint. ''I know, Grace.'' The sigh that escaped her mother's lips prompted Grace to sigh also, and for a moment, the two females fell into silence. ''Please don't worry though, sweetheart; you are a remarkable young lady, and in two short years you will be a fantastic Queen.'' Two short years... That's... soon. "Oh... oh wow." Grace's eyes widened, soothed only slightly by her mother's tender nuzzle. However, to show the female that she appreciated the gesture, she lifted her head up to brush her cheek against the Queen's, in a gentle show of affection.
''It'll be tough at first, but me and your Father will always be here to help. You are being raised to take our place, and I know you will prove all your doubts wrong.'' She smiled at this, feeling rather encouraged. Her mother was so inspirational, along with everything else. She still didn't know how she would live up to Vitani, but if her family and mate were there to help her through it, she'd make it as a monarch. She was sure of it. "You always know the right things to say... I feel better now. Thank you." She smiled, her thoughts lingering on her upcoming coronation for only a moment longer, before she found herself thinking about her husband. Again. "I think Zerissen will do just fine as King though, don't you?"
