Dawn approached the horizon with painted fingers, lacing the skies in hues of oranges and pinks. The colors shimmered over the female's golden cloak as she gracefully moved on the forest ground. The dimming light would soon become lost within the forest's thick canopy and it would become time to settle down. While she was very skilled in the night and quite nocturnal, she was still cautious of what the darkness brought. There were those that lurked in the forest, waiting for the night and it was those creatures that Hathor was the most cautious about. But even then she was lying to herself, she knew exactly who the creature was. Ammon, her "mate", was no doubt on the hunt for her and she was steadily keeping him at bay. Always moving and never staying in the spot for too long. Though she knew the time would come when he finally caught her and she was not looking forward to it. Instead, she kept her mind at ease by exploring everything she could navigate her way through. She was always on an adventure of sorts. It helped passed the time and kept her mind off her hunter.
Hathor made her way through the dense forest, her lithe body bending around the trunks of the trees that grew gallantly together. She needed a place to rest, some place decently safe. Liquid gold eyes spotted something in the distance and instantly recognized the city's wall the closer she got. A sigh of disappointment fell from her velvet lips as she felt a twinge of panic. The sight of the wall made her feel pinned in. White paws stopped in the soft dirt as her keen eyes gathered information from her surroundings. She figured she could take shelter in a tree, but getting up there would be a challenge. Hathor wasn't an excellent climber, but she could manage and now was apparently a time to practice. She prepared herself for the jump that would get her started, only to have it end in failure. She paused for a moment, calculating another way to get to her destination. Instantly she jumped upon one trunk, then pushed off onto a second tree. Once on the second tree, her claws sunk in and she climbed to the first branch. Huge paws lines up one after the other in a balance act as she carefully moved away from the trunk. She then laid down upon the sturdy branch, her eyes scanning her new view. She could see the royal palace with ease through the leaves and hoped nobody would spot her. She wasn't quite sure what one could do to her, since she was on the other side of the wall but still nevertheless her curious mind played through everything that could happen if she was spotted. Dawn. Damask sees the searching shafts of light tenderly peek into his room. He rises from atop his pile of marble clumsily put together to provide him a bed of sorts, and watches as the flickering peach-cream light tints his cold marble home a sickly yellow. But it is only in patches where the slowly crumbling palace's walls have gaping chinks in them. Ripped lengths of silk flutter over these, a poor sight in a lavishly ornamented palace. He eyes them with half a mind to call for his servants to repair them, but stops. What does he care of the furnishings in his room?
A slow grin slides over his face as he imagines how his younger sister, Xylouris, would react. She would probably scream at the dismaying site of this pig-sty of a royal 'room'. And his mother would barge in and demand half the servants of the palace to attend to his bedroom, meanwhile placing him in another of the trillions of chambers in the royal palace. Grace would most likely give him a half smile, and his dad would just frown at him with disappointment. And Zerissen would- That is a question. What would mighty Prince Zerissen do? Damask doesn't know enough about his brother in-law to predict his response.
Sounds – soft rustling sounds – trickle from outside. It could just be his other family members awaking, but somehow he doubts that. Quietly, Damask hops down from his dismal bed and creeps onto his balcony. His cloudy eyes search the forest below. The Anane Forest is still dark in the dawn, with black leaves quivering and pressing onto the dark silhouettes of tree trunks. Thick grass covers the lower halves of the vegetation, making for a perfect hiding spot. Little chirps echo throughout, accompanied by the fluttering of miniature wings.
The male snow leopard presses his face against the half-broken railing of the balcony. His is on the second landing of the palace, so that his direct line of sight falls straight upon the tops of the trees. If he casts his gaze downward, he can just make out the interior of the woods. And as far as he can see and hear, the rustling he heard previously has stopped. Then, suddenly, the birds go silent, and the trees begin to shake.
The duke freezes. An earthquake? But the floor he crouches upon is still. He hesitantly looks back at the forest, in time to see a dark-amber shape catapult itself from one tree to the next. He briefly wonders where it came from, and is momentarily frustrated by the high, stone wall that blocks most of his view of the forest. But he does see the fierce-gold eyes glaring directly at him. He stifles a yell for help, and instead stares right back. His cold eyes grow colder; a chill can almost be felt from them. He holds his head high as he speaks. In a somewhat trembling voice, he says, "I know you're there, so it's no use staying silent. Speak! Who are you, and why perch there… Unless you are an assassin?" His fur quivers, as his nerves are run through with ice. He knows about the cats generations before who were killed for some political reason. He does not wish to be the first of the Arei family to be killed. He just wants to live to give birth to the next generation.

A hind paw hung off the branch while the other remained tucked beneath her toned form. She kept her front paws crossed as she focused on cleaning them. Her ringed tail curling and uncurling as kept her attention on her paws. She needed a temporary distraction and for now cleanliness would do. She had much to worry about but she was quite wonderful at compartmentalizing her thoughts and even her emotions. And right now she had forced herself to think about nothing but what she was currently doing. It was a nice break from the constant thought of her "mate" on her trail. Why he wouldn't let go was beyond her. She didn't think she was anything special and would think anyone would be happier finding someone new than chasing after her. She was quite hopeless in all stands, she didn't want anything to do with lust or love. "I know you're there, so it's no use staying silent. Speak! Who are you, and why perch there...Unless you are an assassin?" Hathor's ears perked up and immediately she stopped what she was doing, her eyes quickly searching for the source of the voice. And then she found him upon the balcony of the palace. "If I were an assassin, you'd be dead before you had a chance to wake up." Her voice was honeyed over as she let each word fall gracefully from her mouth. Her tone was non-threatening and rather held no sense of emotion. But it was merely her just playing with him, she wasn't an assassin or had any interest in killing anyone period. "I'm Hathor and you are?" She should've been a little more cautious talking to this stranger but he was on the other side of the wall. What harm could he do? |

The wary duke etches wicked notches into the quivering wood railing of the balcony, sharpening his claw blades. He stretches his muscles out, and embeds his hind claws into the little crevices of the cracked marble. It's a habit of his that assures him he will stand sturdily in moments of danger. He then leans through the railing, bracing himself with his front paws and balancing with his tail. His ghostly eyes search the brightening forest for the suspected assassin again. He locates her and watches as she meticulously grooms herself.
He wonders if his paranoia at getting assassinated is flaring up again. It is most reasonable that any potential assassin would most likely be more interested in removing the to-be queen from her throne but perhaps a surprise tactic would be eliminating the next in line. There is always that possibility, and as his parents continually warn him, he must be prepared at every moment for the potential to have a killer after his blood. As he speaks, the tigress pauses in her grooming and looks up. A voice as lifeless as death itself slides smoothly from her lips.
"If I were an assassin, you'd be dead before you had a chance to wake up."
It is almost as if she is amused by his accusations. At her words, Damask becomes a little flustered as shame washes over him. He must learn to watch what his tongue says from now on. But a shiver passes through him as he realizes she speaks the truth. A true assassin will hesitate to make noise and will slice his throat before his dreams even abate! Perhaps he ought to look into arranging guards to stand out on the balcony while he sleeps. Judging from the little distance between the balcony and the edge of the forest, any killer with a sense of leaping can easily clear the space between. "You speak the truth," he admits, frowning slightly, "but that does not explain why you are loitering beside the palace. What is your purpose here? You appear to be a loner… are you?"
"I'm Hathor and you are?"
Hah! A loner for sure, he decides. He gives her a curious look. Does she really not know who he is? He knows that even the most savage and foreign loner eventually memorizes the names of the royalty and who they are too. But perhaps she is asking out of politeness or defiance, he cannot discern which. "You truly do not recognize me?" he asks slowly. Then he winces at his false wording. Of course the majority of the outsiders wouldn't recognize him, but merely know his name. Hurriedly he declares, "I am Damask Arei, Duke of Elke, and the second heir to the royal throne of the Arei family. Surely you must have knowledge of our noble lineage? Our family has employed ambassadors to negotiate with even the most far-reaching of civilizations, wherever those may be. You must have heard word of us… somewhere."
